New extended hours are coming to Olin Library during the 2012-13 school year. 24/4 hours (open 24 hours, Monday-Thursday) begin the week of Sunday, Sept. 9, in the fall and the week of Sunday, Jan. 27, in the spring. During reading and exam weeks, Olin Library will remain open 24 hours, seven days per week.

Researchers from the new interdisciplinary Center for Biological Systems Engineering will host its inaugural symposium from 8 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, in Whitaker Hall, Room 100. Rohit V. Pappu, PhD, professor of biomedical engineering, directs the center. Lockheed Martin is sponsoring the symposium.

Inflammation and cell stress are major factors in diabetes. Cell stress also plays a role in Wolfram syndrome, a rare, genetic disorder that afflicts children with many symptoms, including juvenile-onset diabetes. Now scientists at the School of Medicine and elsewhere have identified a molecule that’s key to the cell stress-modulated inflammation that causes insulin-secreting cells to die.

The No. 9-ranked women’s soccer team kicks off the season with two home games at Francis Field this weekend. WUSTL takes on Alma College at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, followed by a noon kickoff Sunday, Sept. 2, against Whitman College. Head coach Jim Conlon returns eight starters from last year’s team, which set a school record with an 18-5 overall mark and advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals.
